Ignite Sport > News and Blogs > Back to sport! Thousands of pupils engage with inclusive physical education sessions

Thousands of primary school pupils in Oxfordshire developed and learnt new sport skills this week as physical education and after-school sessions returned via Ignite Sport UK.

The Oxford-based registered training provider has partnered with a number of schools across the county this academic year to provide pupils the opportunity to access expert coaching in a fun and safe learning environment.

Sessions are inclusive, cater for participants of all abilities and feature a range of fun activities focusing on skills specific to sports including football, cricket, hockey, tennis, netball and more.

Coach Andy Francis leads Ignite Sport UK’s work in primary schools. He said engaging pupils with sport helps contribute towards their physical and mental wellbeing and develops important life skills such as teamwork, leadership, communication and problem solving.

Andy said: “It’s great to be back working in schools after the summer holidays and see the impact school sport has on our younger generation.

“We have all been inspired by the incredible stories of Team GB athletes competing at the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games in recent weeks. But it’s important to understand everyone’s journey on the pitch, in the pool or on the track begins at the foundation level of delivery.

“It’s why we’re so passionate about making our sessions open to everyone so participants have the ability to reach their full potential by developing and learning new skills individually and as a team.”

Each week, Ignite Sport UK coaches will engage more than 2,000 pupils across Oxfordshire with their sports-based sessions and activities.

They are led by eight experienced and qualified coaches who are supported by eight apprentices starting their coaching journey and bringing in fresh learning ideas.

Andy added: “We try to create something for everyone for each of our sessions, so pupils get maximum enjoyment from the time we spend with them.

“It’s important we involve everyone so the power of sport and its ability to bring the best out in pupils is truly felt, regardless of participants’ playing abilities.

“Last year was particularly disruptive as sessions had to be quickly adapted at short notice so they complied with COVID-19 regulations. And while safety will always be our highest priority and we will continue to adhere to the latest Government guidelines, it is great to be back engaging with pupils in person and inspiring our next generation of athletes.”

Ignite Sport UK is a registered training provider for sport and education qualifications, working in further education, apprenticeships, and adult education. It is the official community partner of National League South club Oxford City FC.
